Rough Collie / Collie: Story

Since the 13th century, there have been sheepdogs in Scotland, which have been used mainly in the high moors to keep the sheep. The name “Collie” derives from the Scottish breed “Colley,” whose name is derived from the term “Kohlschaaf” (after dark fur parties).

These sheep originally came to England with the Angling and Saxons. The breed origin of the collies dog is presumably in shepherd dogs of Germanic tribes, which were then refined in England to the shepherd for centuries.

As early as 1858, the Rough Collie / Collie was officially recognized as a breed, which also owes its popularity to British aristocracy. At that time, however, the collie was still essentially “plumper” built, smaller and with a wider head. From 1870, on the today’s Collie type was bred 1881 the first standard. He quickly became known worldwide. In Australia, he is considered the father of the Australian Cattle Dog and the Kelpie. He has also been involved in breeding the Borzoi in Russia and has been crossed with many other dog breeds worldwide.

The long-haired Collie, Rough Collie, has not been used for a long time, instead of being bred out of the original Collie type as a shepherd’s dog of the Border Collie. From the middle of the 19th century, the Collie was and is mainly a companion and exhibition dog. However, he was used by the British army in the world wars as an alert and medical aid dog.

Border Collie

The very narrow head left him for a while to be less intelligent. This changed dramatically with the television career of “Lassie.” Even today Lassie is for many the epitome of a collie. The Collie Dog has been a popular family dog for around 60 years.

There are two variants of the long-haired collies, the British and the American type. The British type is smaller and more compact, with fuller fur and less long head.

Behavior and Essence

The Rough Collie / Collie is considered as adaptable, sensitive and quiet Begleithund (companion dog). He is very gentle, attentive and attached to his owner, while strangers are reserved. Nevertheless, he does not carry a strong watch.

He reports but then leaves the field to others. As a (former) shepherd he is still good to work with his people to motivate, rather active and willing to learn. Due to the decade-long breeding to the show dog, without consideration of work qualities, one can expect most collies dogs but no maximum regarding endurance or work.

Despite being very sensitive, the Collie should be neither shy nor nervous. A good selection of breeders and an elaborate environmental habit help to preserve a strong, non-nervous dog.

Posture and Care

Collies are good companions and family dogs, with the right people. The delicate senses, the sensitive nature and the low stimulus threshold on environmental stimulus, are the inheritance of their shepherd dog existence and also have consequences for life as a family dog.

Collie Dog Breed

Very important is, above all, a good environmental habit in the young dog age, so that the collie does not react unsafe, allergic or terrible to noise, new situations or even humans. Also, a very troubled household can quickly become too much for him. The education of the Collies means, first and foremost, to instruct him confidently and calmly with empathy, to convey to him such security and reliability. A hard hand is completely inappropriate at Collie.

As a former working dog, he still has a lot of willingness to work together with his people. It can be trained as a rescue dog, as well as Obedience or Dog Dance. Long walks, even with the less good weather, are the minimum to fill it out. Freeway is usually possible without major problems since it has hardly hunting drive and usually on walks never far from its man away. Of course, a Rough Collie / Collie does not educate itself.

Most collies are reluctant to remain alone, so you have to teach them patiently. The collie is completely unsuitable for kennel or outdoor keeping.

Like the Australian Shepherd, the Merle gene can cause health problems. This is a gene mutation that leads among other things to a brightening of the coat color. The dog has each gene in two copies, one inherited from the father and one from the mother. If the dog has the Merle gene defect in both copies, this can lead to serious malformations, especially to numbness, blindness and early mortality.

The breeding of Merle-colored dogs must, therefore, be carried out very well, in no case may two Merle-colored dogs be mated together. In the Collie, it is aggravating that adult sable-colored collies often no longer see whether they carry the Merle gene in themselves. Serious breeders, therefore, do not usually prefer a mating of two sable-colored dogs.

Rough Collie / Collie should be regularly brushed so that the fur does not mat. During bad weather walks there is also a lot of dirt hanging in the fur.
